Moderator Training
The Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service, in accordance with its affiliation with the Kettering Foundation, has offered and continues to offer moderator training workshops to prepare citizens and leaders to conduct deliberations in their communities and beyond, guided by the principles established by the National Issues Forums. To be trained in moderating skills allows all interested individuals the ability to lead public forums that address “wicked issues,” or public concerns on important topics. Specific skills transferred by the two-day trainings include:
- Understanding public issues
- Defining deliberation and moderation
- Naming and framing issues for deliberation
- Understanding the impact and potential action steps of deliberation
- Active listening and creating group reflection
- Best practices and strategies for moderation and notetaking
Moderator training workshops are taught by WIPPS staff and affiliates who themselves have been trained through Kettering Foundation workshops and are offered throughout the year to all interested parties, at an affordable cost. WIPPS also maintains a list of trained moderators who are available to lead forums for organizations and groups. Please contact john.greenwood@uwc.edu for more information.
