North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission Strategic Planning Workshop

On January 26, 2011, North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (NCWRPC) board members and commissioners engaged the services of the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service to facilitate a strategic planning workshop that would identify and clarify organizational goals and develop action steps as part of a five year visioning process for the Commission. Workshop attendees participated in an organizational and personal visioning exercise, and they conducted a Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis that identified organizational realities, needs, and aspirations. In addition, NCWRPC board members analyzed relevant internal and external cultural trends and challenges, and they created five strategic goals with accompanying strategies and action steps:

  1. Adapt to change
  2. Increase funding
  3. Improve communication
  4. Maintain county (member) support
  5. Assist overstretched staff

While these goals constitute a roadmap for NCWRPC for the next 3-5 years, the workshop itself, plus the outcomes it generated, were seen as a first step in an ongoing strategic planning process. Participants recommended that the NCWRPC staff undertake a similar exercise so that staff input could be added to the board member report to further refine the organization’s strategic goals and action planning.
