UW Colleges Service-Learning Website

The UW Colleges have a long history of service-learning projects on campus and in the community. Service-learning fits into the mission of the Wisconsin Idea and the University’s commitment to student and civic engagement in the communities of Wisconsin. Service-learning conferences and workshops are held every year at various UWC locations to further engage students, faculty, staff, and community partners, and the Colleges are working on institutionalizing service-learning on each of the 13 campuses, in those campuses’ local communities, in various academic departments, and with as many students as possible. This website is a collection of resources for students, faculty, staff, and community partners on service-learning and community engagement.

UW- Extension Service-Learning Website

http://www.uwex.uwc.edu/service-learning/

Service-learning is a curricular approach now found in many K-12 and higher education settings. Service-learning is a way for UW – Extension faculty and staff to expand and enhance the ways they serve the people of Wisconsin. For UW-Extension faculty who are situated on college campuses, service-learning is a method of teaching that incorporates real-world experience with lessons learned in the classroom, and it has become a mainstay of the UW Colleges' curriculum. The many community partnerships already in place through UW-Extension projects provide the opportunity for new service-learning endeavors, and UW- Extension encourages collaborative efforts among UWEX faculty, UWC faculty, and community members to create new service-learning projects.

Campus Compact

http://www.compact.org/

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. Through its national network, state member institutions receive the training, resources, and advocacy they need to build strong surrounding communities and teach students the skills and values of democracy. Membership includes public, private, and two-and four-year institutions across the spectrum of higher education that share knowledge and resources with their communities, creating economic development initiatives, and supporting service and service-learning efforts in key areas such as literacy, health care, hunger, homelessness, the environment, and senior services.

Wisconsin Campus Compact

Wisconsin Campus Compact's (WiCC) mission is to strengthen civic engagement and service-learning partnerships between Wisconsin's postsecondary institutions and the communities they serve. In all the work that WiCC undertakes, concepts such as service, volunteerism, and activism are united with educational goals to develop university graduates who are prepared not only for a career but also for lives as informed and involved citizens at both the local and global levels. The Wisconsin Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA Community-Based-Learning Project is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and allows 35 AmeriCorps*VISTA members to serve as community-based-learning coordinators throughout Wisconsin. The project goal is to increase the capacity of local community organizations to provide services that will assist members of low-income groups to escape from poverty.
